We are living longer. The norm is no longer a gold watch and a few years afterwards in a recliner. We work on and play harder. We seek engagement, adventure, creative endeavors, and sometimes new careers. There are choices and there are questions. "Do I have the financial resources to make a change?" "What will I do with my time?" How likely am I to have my health and how can I plan when I don't really know?"
Coaching can be of great benefit at this important time. Retiring from one job or career doesn't mean we must stop working, but if not our current job, what? It's up to us!
How important do we wish to make relationships with family and friends in retirement? We might assume new roles, becoming "wise elders," as Richard Leider suggests in his books, Claiming Your Place at the Fire and Something to Live For: Finding Your Way in the Second Half of Life. How can we keep learning and engaged?
Living longer means that experiencing loss is inevitable. How do we go about transitioning after the loss of a partner, our work, or important friendships? What do we want to leave behind as legacy for family, community or our profession?
We are accustomed to thinking about having and protecting our financial "nest eggs." But what about other important reserves: our health, our friendships and our values? How will we preserve and invest in these vital resources as we age?
"While my financial advisor assured me I was financially able to retire, Toni helped me sort through some emotional and logistical issues I had been struggling with. She helped me define and refine retirement goals, and helped me feel more confident that my retirement will be a wonderful new beginning to this next phase of my life."
